Gordon County Fire Chief Calls for a Temporary Burn Ban Due to Drought Conditions

PRESS RELEASE – Gordon County officials have called for a temporary burn ban on outdoor burning due to ongoing drought conditions and an increased risk of wildfire throughout the area.

The restriction is being sought as a proactive measure to protect public safety, property, and natural resources from the heightened danger of rapidly spreading fires.

The Gordon County Fire Department advises, all outdoor burning of yard debris – including leaves, limbs, grass, and other vegetative materials – should not occur within Gordon County. In addition, the use of fire pits and any open, uncontained outdoor fires should be avoided during the duration of this burn ban.

Limited exceptions remain in place. Cooking is allowed only in approved grills and must be attended and actively supervised at all times. Agricultural and forestry burns may continue if conducted under a valid permit and in compliance with guidelines established by the Georgia Forestry Commission. Controlled burns conducted by authorized government agencies for public safety or land management purposes are also permitted

Upon Board of Commissioners approval the burn ban will be enforced by Gordon County Fire Rescue, Gordon County Code Enforcement, and other designated county officials. Violations may result in enforcement action in accordance with local ordinances and state law.

This temporary restriction will remain in effect until drought conditions improve and county officials determine it is safe to lift the ban.

Gordon County will continue to provide updates through its official website, social media platforms, and local media outlets. Residents are strongly encouraged to comply with the burn ban and exercise extreme caution during this period of dry weather, as fires can spread quickly and unpredictably.
