Gordon County Deputy Recognized for Helping Juvenile During Mental Health Crisis

GORDON COUNTY, Ga. — A Gordon County sheriff’s deputy has been recognized for his response to a juvenile experiencing a mental health crisis and threatening self-harm.

According to the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was dispatched to a private residence near the Farmville community on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 2, following a 911 report involving a juvenile armed with a knife and threatening suicide.

Authorities said Deputy Gabe Shipman arrived at the residence and quickly took control of the situation. Using communication and negotiation techniques, Shipman was able to persuade the juvenile to put down the knife and seek medical attention.

No injuries were reported by the sheriff’s office in connection with the response.

On Wednesday, Aug. 5, Sheriff Mitch Ralston recognized Shipman for his actions and presented him with a Commendation Medal.

“Deputy Shipman’s actions were brave and compassionate,” Ralston said. “I am proud of him, and we hope that the juvenile involved in this event recovers fully.”

The sheriff’s office did not release identifying information about the juvenile.
