Gilmer Sheriff’s Deputy arrested for assault

JASPER, Ga. – Pickens County has released the charges against a Gilmer County Sheriff’s Deputy after he was arrested last night, January 31, 2021.
According to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call regarding domestic violence at approximately 10:16 p.m. on January 31, 2021. Authorities are not releasing additional details about the incident itself at this time.
However, the report did say that they arrested an off-duty Gilmer Sheriff’s Office deputy. Named in the report as Jason Lynn Newman, 34. The Pickens Sheriff’s Office stated that Gordon County Sheriff’s Office located Newman around 1 a.m. before Pickens County took him into custody where he is currently being held at the Pickens Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Center.
According to reports, Newman is facing charges involving a misdemeanor “Interfering with a 911 call” as well as charges of obstructing police, Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery, and Reckless Conduct.
